Whether you’re trying to eat healthy or just looking to get in and out fast, grocery stores can be a minefield of distractions. Stores are designed to draw you in and purchase things you don’t need. But a few smart choices ahead of time can make a big difference.
The simplest tip is also the one we forget the most: you need is a shopping list! It might seem rather obvious, but having a list keeps you focused. Going in with no plan leads to unnecessary and unhealthy purchases. Instead, go in knowing exactly what you need and keep all the frivolous extras out of your cart. You’ll stay on track with your goals, spend less time in the stores, and save money.
You’ll want to keep to the perimeter of most stores when shopping. Most stores have the same layout, with perishable items on the outside and processed and frozen items in the center. Keeping to the outside lets you choose healthier, fresher options. It also lets you choose nutrient-dense foods that give you the most bang for your buck.
Finally, don’t get overzealous with your purchases. It’s fantastic to want to eat healthy, but buying stuff you don’t eat is wasteful. A little advance planning goes a long way to avoiding food waste. Only purchase what you know you’ll eat and in the quantities you can reasonably use.
