Many of us are becoming more aware of chemicals in the products we use every day, whether because of environmental concerns or sensitivities to certain products. Luckily there are many natural products that provide the same level of cleaning power without all the harsh scents and bad effects. Using them can even save you a lot of money over commercial products.
Baking soda is one of the most versatile products. You probably already use it to bake and may have a box to deodorize your fridge. But baking soda also makes a great addition to your laundry. Adding ½ a cup to your load with your normal amount of laundry soap will brighten both whites and colors. Baking soda’s mild abrasive properties are also beneficial for scouring tubs, sinks, and surfaces that can easily be scratched.
Vinegar is another powerhouse for non-toxic cleaning. You probably already know that it’s a great cleaner for coffee machines. But plain, white vinegar can also be used as a degreaser or to remove mildew. It will also remove lime deposits in the bathroom.
You can find many recipes for non-toxic cleaners online, but a great all-purpose cleaner is to simply add 1 tablespoon of baking soda, 1 teaspoon of castile soap, and 3-5 drops of tea tree oil to a spray bottle of water and shake to combine. The spray will clean, disinfect, and degrease, all without toxins.
