We all want a fresh-smelling home, but many products designed to do so contain harsh chemicals. Luckily, there are many things you can do to make your home smell great that won’t irritate your lungs. You’ll also find these suggestions cost-effective.
Instead of purchasing chemical air freshener spray, create your own. A standard recipe is ¾ cup of water, 2 tablespoons vodka or rubbing alcohol, and your favorite essential oil or combination of oils (around 10-20 drops total, depending on your desired strength.) This recipe fills an 8 oz spray bottle, but you can easily increase the quantities for larger bottles. Citrus oils not only leave a clean smell but also will remind you of summer. For a relaxing feel, try lavender or vanilla.
You can also make the whole house smell fresh by heating aromatic herbs or fruits on the stove. Fill a pot about halfway with water and add cinnamon sticks, vanilla beans, fresh or dried herbs, or citrus peel. Let the mixture simmer on low heat until your home smells amazing. Keep a close eye on the pot to make sure the water doesn’t burn off and add water as needed. You can even stew fruits like pears or plums in liquid to get the same effect and have a dessert to enjoy after!
