Many of us are eager to get outdoors and enjoy everything summer has to offer. But often, bad weather or the heat of the day can keep us inside, longing for a bit of sun. Here are some tips to brighten up your home and bring some of that sunshine inside!
The simplest way to bring summer in, is to get fresh air circulating! Open up the windows and let your space breathe a little. If you use candles or air fresheners, swap out your current scents for citrus, linen, or lavender. You can even make your own non-toxic room freshener using ¾ cup of water, 2 tablespoons vodka or rubbing alcohol, and your favorite essential oil or combination of oils (around 10-20 drops total, depending on how strong you want it.) This recipe fills an 8 oz spray bottle, but you can double or triple the recipe for larger bottles. Play with different combinations like lemon and eucalyptus or lavender and grapefruit.
Bringing the outdoors in with seasonal flowers adds a pop of color to your rooms, but don’t stop there! Bowls of lemons or limes make great centerpieces, and having oranges and apples on the coffee table will entice you to grab them instead of heavy snacks. Using seasonal fruits and vegetables to make fresh salads or cold pasta salads helps you feel lighter on hot days, and also helps beat the heat since no oven is required!
Lastly, consider some minor changes to lighten up your décor. Try sheer or lightweight curtains, rag rugs, and light duvets on the bed. Accent pillows in bright colors can also add some interest and warm up a room. You can even try inexpensive slip covers in neutral or light tones to give new life to your sofa.
